Step by Step Instructions

Step 1: Choose Figurines

Head to your local charity shop for old figurines that need a new purpose. It could be anything such as animals, dolls, or even mythical creatures. The quirkier and more interesting, the better.

These will be the stars of the spooky Halloween display.

I delayed doing this craft for several years. Because I don’t know much about figurines. I didn’t want to spoil something special by making it into fun Halloween decor.

So, I set myself a few rules.

Choose standalone figures. Not ones in a group that someone could collect as a set.

Find ones that are lightweight and cheap. Often charity shops research their items and know when something is valuable. With that in mind, I had a fun little variety of characters to play with.

Step 2: Spray Paint Figurines Black

Once you have your figurines, take them outside (or in a well-ventilated area) and coat them with black spray paint.

Matte black works great for a creepier, understated look, while a glossy finish adds a polished yet eerie effect.

If you can’t easily use a spray can, the spray can attachment shown here is one of my most recommended tools. It slots onto the top of the can and you spray using the trigger grip instead.

Cover the figurines completely. This doesn’t take long. With this spray paint, you can recoat in a few minutes.

And the paint is dry to the touch in a couple of hours.

Two coats work perfectly for full coverage.

I used a cardboard backdrop to protect the surface and walked around the figures to spray them from each side. Which is faster than turning them around or waiting for each side to dry.

Step 3: Paint Eyes Red

This is where the spook factor comes in. Using a small brush, carefully paint the eyes red.

The contrast of the glowing red eyes against the black body gives them a sinister vibe.

There are two types of eyes you can paint. And it depends on whether your figure has raised pupils or not.

If they do have raised pupils, you can paint the whole eye. Then gently dab off the topmost paint, where the pupil is. This creates a different, almost blood-shot, look.

Don’t worry if your hand isn’t steady. Imperfect eyes can make them look even more eerie. I also had a paper towel to dab off anywhere where I didn’t want the paint to go.

You could even do drips from the eyes if you want to go for scary rather than spooky.

And that’s the entire process. So fast, easy and most importantly fun.

Once the paint dries you can place the figurines around your home.

Can’t you just imagine these spooky figures in a display case or on shelves? Lit up with candles to add flickering light on the black figures.

They would look especially creepy peeking out from unexpected places like bookshelves, or windowsills. Their eerie red eyes make them the perfect unique Halloween decoration.

Unlike traditional Halloween decor like spider webs and skeletons, these spooky figurines have a modern edge.

They’re unexpected, yet creepy enough to fit right in with the Halloween vibe. Plus, it’s a quick project you can do in an hour.

These figurines are easy to make, but they’re also a fun way to upcycle old toys or decor items you already have lying around.

Whether you’re throwing a Halloween party or just decorating your home for the spooky season, these figurines will stand out.

  1. So simple and so effective! I wouldn’t trust our local thrift shop to know what’s valuable; they employ kids that have no clue lol.
